Hollywood Palladium & the Sound City Players

The last time I was at the Hollywood Palladium I was wearing a belly shirt and Doc Martins.  Atrocious, right?  I don’t remember the exact show we saw as there were many – No Doubt, Veruca Salt, Hole, the Offspring, Bad Religion, L7 – and I’m certain I wore a similar uniform to each.  Last month, we headed up to Sunset Blvd. to see the Sound City Players show and it was 1994 all over again.  You could feel the history of the Palladium when you walked through the doors, but better yet, I could feel my history.

For those of you not familiar with the Hollywood Palladium, it is a Los Angeles landmark that was built in 1940.  Originally built as a dance hall, Frank Sinatra was the venue’s first performer.  Crazy, right?  It was home to The Lawrence Welk Show for many years.  Jimi Hendrix performed there in 1969 and Stevie Wonder in 1973.  The Grateful Dead and Keith Richards recorded live from there.  Richard Prior filmed a performance there.  Shots for movies like Almost Famous and The Blues Brothers were filmed there.  See what a mean?  The place reads like a history book of awesomeness.

I was barely 19 back when I was visiting the Hollywood Palladium on a regular basis.  I remember it being tight with security but didn’t learn until last night why.  Lots of fights with knives, apparently.  I was usually accompanied by a good friend of mine at the time – Josh – who was like 6′ 8″ tall and he never hesitated to tell someone to back off.  He always tore up the pit.  The best part of the night was downloading the evening’s events on the ride back to Orange County.  Good times.

So, the Sound City Players?  Amazing.  Maybe beyond amazing and a once-in-a-lifetime kind of experience.  Sound City is a documentary about a now defunct recording studio in Los Angeles.  So many famous musicians have recorded there – Fleetwood Mac, Rick Springfield, Cheap Trick, Rage Against the Machine, and Nirvana.  The show at the Palladium was a full-out jam session after the documentary’s theatrical premiere.  The bands I just mentioned?  Yes, they were there – in some way, shape, or form.  Here’s a link to the complete line up.  Did I mention that Dave Grohl put this whole thing together?  Yep, he can’t possibly get much cooler.

My favorite performance of the night was probably John Fogerty.  How can you not love Proud Mary?  It was great.  Loved Rick Springfield too.  Many years ago, my husband and I got caught dancing alone on the dance floor to Jesse’s Girl at a company party.  We were rocking it pretty hard ’80′s style until we noticed we the only ones out there.  Dancing halted and we hightailed it to the bar.  So seeing Rick Springfield performing that same song was kind of a moment for us.  The evening ended with Stevie Nicks.  I just about died, especially when she and Dave sang together.

I smile knowing that I get to add the Sound City Players show to my own history with the venue.  It will definitely be a night to remember but I can’t help to think that it doesn’t come anywhere close to trumping my early days at the Hollywood Palladium.  Even in a belly shirt.

Yo Gabba Gabba – Thanks for the Memories

For a good solid two years, Yo Gabba Gabba was in some heavy rotation in our house.  My girl was a huge fan and a full blown YGG obsession started to spread among the toddler crowd.  Well, that girl is now 4 1/2 and Austin Moon now trumps DJ Lance and friends.  Le sigh.  For this mom who cannot stand to listen to any sort of children’s programming, I could tolerate Yo Gabba Gabba.  I mean, who doesn’t love a “ska-toon”?

Every November the Yo Gabba Gabba tour comes to town and we’ve gone the last two years.  I’m starting to think that it’s not going to happen this year.  I guess it just makes me sad because my baby is growing up and she’s so over it.  Can I just keep her small for a little bit longer?  I can’t handle her new found love for makeup and talk of her future husband (even though we love her choice!).

All this change makes me want to reminisce and therefore I thought I would share one of my favorite posts.  This originally ran in early 2011 but I thought I’d re-run it again as we bid adieu to Foofa, Toodee, Muno, Brobee, Plex and DJ Lance Rock.

:::

Forget Barney, we were attending extravagant and fabulous Yo Gabba Gabba themed parties!

My good friend, Fran, brainstormed for months on creating Gabba Land for her daughter’s 4-year-old birthday party.  She had ideas for miles and blew my mind when we got to the party.  The kids played “There’s a Party in my Tummy” bean bag toss, they crafted “I Like Bugs” bug houses, did a photo shoot with a life-sized Foofa, and donned the DJ’s signature orange hat. All the food you see below was painstakingly made from scratch by Fran’s mom.  She’s crazy talented and I know for a fact that these photos have gone viral on Pinterest.  Oh, and not only is everything insanely cute – it was all delicious too.DJ Lance boom box cookies Brobee Yo Gabba Gabba vegetable platter

These are pin-worthy, don’t you think?

How great are these Yo Gabba Gabba birthday ideas?  Are you inspired?

Which Yo Gabba Gabba party snack is your favorite?  I wish I would have photographed all the cupcakes.  You can see a couple of the other character cupcakes in the photo with the cake.  And speaking of that cake…  Inside, the most beautiful rainbow layers I’ve ever tasted.

Remember I mentioned that live Yo Gabba Gabba show?  The first one we attended featured my favorite Foo Fighter – Dave Grohl.  He sat with his family a couple of rows behind us but dropped it like it was hot during the special “Dancey-Dance.”  You might be able to hear me scream a little in the video.  I big puffy heart Dave Grohl.

Thanks to Yo Gabba Gabba for the great memories!

Reverb 11 | Reflections of 2011 Days 2 thru 12

I give you my abbreviated version of Reverb 11 hosted by the Modchik.

I really aspire to finish this exercise but I’m already 10 days behind. Bear with me, readers.

Reverb 11 – Day 2
What would you do with more free time?

The question asks what I would do with more “free time” – meaning sans preschooler – and I feel all sorts of guilty when I dream of alone time. Will I ever be alone again? I miss those days when it was just me. The days when I would accomplish all the things on the daily to-do list. Days without repeatedly telling someone to put their shoes on and that “we gotta go.” But those days were often lonely. So, I’m glad to have my little one tagging along. But, if I did have a few extra minutes of free time I would simply love to be alone in my house. Shuffling around the house, organizing things, shifting things into near perfection, quiet time to be with my thoughts, quiet time to read a book, lounging around with my feet snuggled under a warm blanket. These things I dream for.

Reverb 11 – Day 3
What projects have you started?

A vegetable garden. Remains incomplete.
Window treatments for the downstairs. Remains incomplete.
This blog. Ongoing.
Me. Ongoing.

Reverb 11 – Day 4
What projects have you finished?

I would have never imagined that we would have renovated our kitchen this year. It really wasn’t on the major to-do list until we decided we were going to stay put in this house. I love it. My dream kitchen.

Reverb 11 – Day 5
Highlight of 2011

When: October 13, 2011
Where: The Forum, Inglewood, CA
Who: Foo Fighters
Why: To hear Dave Grohl sing the words I have been feeling for the last three years was pretty f’ing amazing.

Reverb 11 – Day 6
What was a difficult part of 2011?

I made a really stupid and lame mistake this year that will bother me for a life time. I know what I did was silly and childish and I feel all sorts of regret. And I must pay the consequences. Enough said.

Reverb 11 – Day 7
What was a lesson learned in 2011?

See Day 6.

Reverb 11 – Day 8
When were you proud?

I’m a proud mama, hands down.
In terms of being proud of myself – that takes a little more reflection.

Reverb 11 – Day 9
Who or what inspires you?

I have really great role models in my life who I draw inspiration from all the time. And then there is Oprah, of course. But, I will forever have the image of LeBron James after he shoots and makes a last second shot in Game 2 of the 2009 NBA playoffs against the Orlando Magic. Now hear me…I”m not a basketball fan. I’m not a LeBron fan. Or a Cavs fan. But the emotion on LeBron’s face after he sinks that three-pointer is something I could just drink in. I’d die to feel that kind of elation. I’m inspired by his determination that yields those kinds of results. I want that for me.

Reverb 11 – Day 10
How do you fill the void?

Simply, I eat. I’m certain I have some kind of eating disorder.

Reverb 11- Day 11
Holiday traditions

Reverb 11 – Day 12
What books did you read?

Yikes. I haven’t read a lot this year. And it will be something I set out to change in 2012. I do have waiting for me “The Help”, “Room”, and I have to finish “The Happiness Project.” I’ve read a lot of preschool-age books, if that counts.

Lovely, Love Some Yo Gabba Gabba

Those crazy kids behind Yo Gabba Gabba had me when I first saw a “ska-toon” with music from GOGO13 and Alex Desert of Hepcat.  My girl wasn’t even a year-old yet but we watched the show a lot.

Granted, some episodes are harder to tolerate than others – especially if you’ve seen them over and over (read: Halloween! dvd).  But, you can’t deny that they sometimes feature some really great music (and musicians…more on that in a minute).

A full blown Gabba obsession broke out amongst our toddler friends.  Forget Barney, we were attending extravagant and fabulous YGG themed parties!

A special party guest: PLEX!

Another friend brainstormed for months for her daughter’s 4th Gabba themed party.  She had ideas for miles.  We (or, the kids) played “There’s a Party in my Tummy” beanbag toss, they crafted “I Like Bugs” bug houses, did a photo shoot with a life-sized Foofa, and got to pretend to be DJ Lance Rock.  Check out the yummy goodies from this party.  All made by my friend’s mom.  And insanely delicious.

My friend probably still has this somewhere because she has a thing about throwing things away that have a face.

Not to mention, there were at least seven rainbow layers inside.
Notice the character cupcakes too?
How could you eat this?

Last November, I took our girl to see the Yo Gabba Gabba Live in Your City tour.  A total blast – for me too – to dance around to The Aquabats and meet Leslie Hall.  But the biggest thrill – and I mean THRILL – was to see my future second husband, Dave Grohl doing the Dancey-Dance.
